Grr, my post about the weather here just got deleted. I’m annoyed. the upshot is that it’s cold and snowy here and that I would much prefer not having to go outside into it if I could avoid it.
That more or less sums it up.

It’s been incredibly cold here lately with temperatures below zero (Fahrenheit) a lot of the time and lots of snow piling up. I’ve sort of avoided going to work (by finding productive things to do at home, like taxes and sorting out life insurance). And I have had to go in to work a number of times because of various things being broken and needing fixing. But today I braved the elements completely and walked up to the lab. A very productive time will be had by all, I am sure.
On another note, for people interested in the weather here in Ithaca I recommend The Ithaca Climate Page, which has useful information like the snow depth, accumulated snowfall etc.

I really should start updating this more frequently. I feel like I’m too busy doing interesting things at the moment to be able to properly devote myself to recording those things in blog form. Maybe there’s a lesson in that somewhere. Maybe it explains why many people’s Livejournals (even more than other blogs, seemingly) are… less than entirely brilliant, not to mention lacking in literary style. My blog is completely different, of course. Any linguistic or literary oddities you may find in this blog are the result of careful consideration and are there in order to allow for a deeper understanding of the author and thus the human condition.
Or something.
Looking out my office window I am struck by the fact that I should get a digital camera. My previous attempts to buy one were foiled by Dell, and I’ve sort of had a hard time really getting into the idea of it again since then. But right now the snow outside is particularly interesting looking, partly because it’s close enough to ice that it’s completely enveloped branches of bushes and trees. In some ways it looks more like really thick hoar frost than snow. Obviously, having some sort of photographic record of this sight would be nice… oh well. Maybe when I get a laptop?
That search has been postponed for the moment because of the imminent release of new chipsets for laptops. Sonoma (Centrino replacement), AMD64 Turion and G5 Powerbooks are going to make anything I buy now obsolete even faster than is usually the case with laptops. As I was explaining to my housemates: “There is never a good time to buy a laptop. But there are times that are worse than others and right now is one of the worse times to buy one.” It’s looking like it will be sometime this summer, probably. At that point the older chipset notebooks (the ones that are sort of top o the line right now) will be considerably reduced in price and I should be able to find something that will fulfill all my requirements for a song. Maybe not a song, but hopefully more along the lines of an album than of a twenty-disc complete works box set. More on the laptop to follow…
