New plots

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 30, 2006

Well, I waited at home all day today for my new mouse to arrive, since I would have to sign for it. This didn’t mean that the day was completely wasted, however, as I was able to do a fair bit of work from here. Partly in making my plots prettier, but chiefly in making sure I’ve got all the backgrounds included in my considerations. So I’ve ended up with pretty-looking plots like this one:

missmass2canvas.jpg

It’s a plot of the number of events with a given amount of missing mass in them, or rather, the missing mass squared, calculated as the square of the missing energy minus the square of the missing momentum. If there is in fact a neutrino in the event (like there is for my signal), then there should be zero missing mass, since neutrinos have zero mass. Hence the large red peak at zero.

Anyway, that’s enough about my work. I just wanted to show a pretty picture and indicate that real actual work is taking place on my thesis. I’m not just pretending.

Oh, and the mouse did eventually arrive, so I’m now using it. All very exciting. I am actually kind of excited to go to work tomorrow so I can try out the whole setup with the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combination :)

A laptop once more

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 29, 2006

I’ve got a temporary battery for my laptop! I’m borrowing a spare one from the lab until I get the new one from Apple, so I can once again enjoy the actual portable nature of my computer. I’m very much looking forward to not having to shut down my computer every time I go to and from work.

There probably wasn’t really much of a risk in continuing to use my old battery, but I feel a lot more at ease using a battery I know to be safe.

Wireless mouse shipped

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 29, 2006

I just got an email from Apple saying that my wireless Mighty Mouse has been shipped. According to UPS it’s left Harrisburg, PA. Which could in principle mean that it will get here soon, but these things often seem to sit around for a couple of days so I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for it to appear on my doorstep before next week.

Movies, some good some bad

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 29, 2006

Well, it’s time for a less me-centric post.

I’ve been watching a reasonable number of movies lately and while I haven’t managed to watch Snakes on a Plane yet, I thought it was worth writing something about the movies I have been seeing.

First up we have the best up the bunch. March of the Penguins, which Beth and I watched Saturday morning while it was rather drab and rainy outside. A fabulous movie I wish I had gotten the chance to see in an IMAX theatre since that would have been a truly fabulous experience. I’m astonished by just how cold and brutal the climate is in Antarctica. The cinematography is quite something and although I had some minor quibbles with how bright it seemed to be during some of the scenes which they were saying took place in June, I was altogether very impressed with the movie. And baby penguins are very very cute :)

Another snowy movie that I finally got around to watching is The Shining, which was just very disturbing. It was very good, but in many ways all too believable. The idea of someone going crazy from being isolated up in the Rockies all winter long seemed very plausible… and few people do that sort of creepy psychotic persona like Jack Nicholson.

I also finally got around to watching Batman Begins, which absolutely rocked. Christian Bale is really excellent in it and I’m very excited to see how the sequel works out. I felt that Christopher Nolan did an outstanding job of it, better even than Tim Burton, although they are stylistically extremely different. This one is rather more realistic, in some sense. And the supporting cast is also quite fantastic.

On the less-good front, we have Æon Flux, which was extremely entertaining in its badness. It did spoil it somewhat by trying to make some sort of statement about the human condition, I think, which rather messed things up. Silly movies with hot girls kicking ass should really stick to their schtick, I feel. Like Underworld, for instance. However, there can be little doubt that Æon Flux is a work of art compared to Ultraviolet. Now Tess had warned me that while Æon Flux was so bad it was good, Ultraviolet managed to transcend that barrier again and be so bad it was bad. And I didn’t really believe that it was true. Because I thought to myself, well “How bad can I be?”. Alas, I should have trusted Tess. Because I just finished watching it, and wow. It really sucked. I’m not sure if I can quite put my finger on why it was so bad, or maybe it’s that I don’t really want to put sufficient thought into it to be able to ascertain the source of its badness. I mean, there are the obvious things like bad dialogue, poor acting, etc. But this managed to go beyond those things, somehow. Because I had expected that. The fight scenes were just sort of corny, I guess. I don’t want to say unrealistic, because that’s a weird thing to complain about, but… it was all just so horribly contrived, I guess. Anyway, I didn’t pay to watch it and I still feel kind of robbed. It’s that bad.

On a more positive note, The Venture Brothers is an inspired show that should really be watched by more people.

Lack of portability of laptop

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 29, 2006

For those of you who have heard about the battery recall of powerbooks, I’m sure you’ve all been wondering whether my powerbook has been affected. And the answer is yes. So the good news is that Apple is going to send me a new battery. In fact, it’s apparently maybe already on its way. The bad news is that I shouldn’t use my old battery in the meantime. Which means that for the moment I can only use my laptop when it is hooked up to an A/C power supply. Now only can I not use my computer without it being hooked up to an A/C outlet, I have to shut it down every time I disconnect it. Which means turning it off whenever I go to and from work. And while that’s not a huge hassle, it is very annoying. It also seems to reset the clock because there’s no battery in there to keep anything stored in ram or anything, apparently.

All in all it’s just a very frustrating experience. I mean, there isn’t anything actually preventing me from using my current battery, but the fact that they’ve actually issued a recall on them means that if I were to use it and something were to go wrong with my computer, there would obviously be no warranty coverage for it at all. So that’s not really any good. And I’m also somewhat wary of using something that was considered sufficiently bad that they needed to recall it.

I really hope that the battery gets here faster than expected… But I don’t really believe that will happen. The really annoying part isn’t so much when using it around the house but rather when I’m at work and want to take it with me to a meeting. That’s where the having to shut it down when I unplug it is really annoying. Or if I want to take it to Jim’s office in order to show him some plots, or just show Deb something with my code or something. That’s the really annoying part. I feel like it’s sort of killed the laptop part of my laptop, essentially. And that is just extremely frustrating. But it’s not at all worth buying a new battery, of course, since I don’t think I’ll ever need two batteries for this thing. All in all, it’s left me kind of grumbly.

A failure of a Monday

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 29, 2006

Well, today managed to be something of an abject failure in most respects. But I guess days like this are bound to occur from time to time. It has, however, been some time since I last had a day like this and so I’d come to expect a continuous flow of productive days, I guess. Upon reflection, I know that’s not really a very reasonable thing to expect, however, and so I should come to expect that there will be bad days from time to time.

Tomorrow will hopefully prove to be a better day. There’s Amber in the evening, which should be good. I’ve been waiting to talk to JP about some power-related questions for my character, so hopefully those issues will get cleared up. I’m not sure when we’re going to start doing some character preludes, so to speak. It would be nice to get things going at least a little just to sort of see how the world is going to work. I hope my concept works. It doesn’t have to float, you see, since he’s from Rebma :)

And I’ll have my usual weekly meeting to discuss mu-nu things. So I will probably have to try to work my ass off in the morning so I have something vaguely intelligent to say at that. I did manage to run over some data after a few failed attempts last week. So it’s good that I can at least in principle run over data. I think for the moment, though, I have to go back to running on Monte Carlo so I can understand the backgrounds. So it’s back to trying to learn python and regular expressions. My python book still hasn’t shipped from amazon, though. It’s not entirely sure when it will, it seems. They seem to think by the 1st, so that’s something I guess. In the meantime I need to get back into doing these online tutorials. My enthusiasm is, alas, not too difficult to curb.

Work update

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 23, 2006

It’s been a while since I posted anything resembling an update on the state of my work (if I’ve ever in fact done so) so here goes.

Things have recently been going very well. I managed to get my code all working and running some time ago which had the wonderful consequence that I could move on from debugging to something a little more interesting. Plots. There is certainly still some debugging going on as I continue to make changes to the code in order to allow me to look at various other things but it’s nice to be able to feel like I’m actually moving forward rather than just banging my head against the wall which is very much the position I was in for pretty much the entire first half of the year.

I’m also having weekly meetings with my adviser Jim and with a post-doc Deb (short for Debabrata), which are useful for several reasons. First of all it’s good to have a weekly deadline to meet. I have to prepare some plots and be able to say what I’ve done or haven’t done and so on. It’s also good to have some people to bounce ideas off, of course. A major problem in my work has been having to work more or less by myself all this time. It will be very useful having Deb working on these things as well just so that I can go talk to him when I’m frustrated with code or root or some other thing as well as to talk about the actual physics. This may be particularly important since I suspect Jim is likely to be very busy now that he’s taking over as director of the lab. He is going to try to be around a fair bit but I think that his responsibilities may end up taking a fair bit of his time. I guess we’ll see how things work out.

I also talked to Jim about whether I should be thinking about beginning to write some of my thesis now just so I’m not putting that off forever. It would probably be a good idea, in part because I haven’t really thought about physics in a really long time; high voltage systems and coding don’t really count. However, at the moment things are going very well with the actual data analysis and so I think I’m going to continue with that until it starts to slow down. Then I’ll do a literature search and start trying to remember the physics behind what I’m supposedly studying. And then I may start writing the introduction for this thesis.

So for now, things are look pretty good and like they’re coming along pretty nicely.

Up next, an update on where things stand with gaming… a much more interesting topic.

Wireless keyboard acquired

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 22, 2006

Well, I decided to go ahead and buy the thing. So far I don’t have any complaints, and the fact that it’s wireless is quite nice. I’m going to have to use it for a while before I can really make any statements about its ergonomic qualities, though. What I can say is that it’s very pretty looking :) But that should hardly surprise anyone, given that it’s an apple product.

Apparently there’s a bit of a wait on getting a wireless mac mouse. According to apple’s website, they ship in 5-7 business days. However, the Cornell store says they haven’t actually seen any of them in stock yet, which makes me a little bit suspicious as to whether or not they’re shipping them at all at the moment. I may order one and just see what happens.

Today my wrists do seem a bit unhappy but I think that’s primarily because I was doing a lot of very repetitve editing when I was cutting stuff out of a 29,000 line log file. I think I should write a script to do this for me, but it was actually informative to go through it and look at it manually, so I can’t say it was a total waste.

How the US Military just reeks of class…

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 21, 2006

Apparently, the US military is having a hard time getting enough bad press lately or something, because for some reason a lot of recruiters are seeing the need to sexually assault or otherwise harass young girls they’re trying to recruit for the service. This story is just kind of disappointing, I guess, although not really surprising in some ways. But the idea of military recruiters going to high schools and meeting 16-18 year old girls who are interested in joining the military, and then sexually assaulting them in their cars or apartments… wow, that’s just classy on a level that I hadn’t really thought about.

Anyway, apparently it’s only about 100 girls or so… in the last year. Apparently they don’t really prosecute the offenders very heavily either. This seems like the kind of thing that must just be great for recruiting numbers?

I wonder if the people who did the study are going to get into trouble for damaging the image of the military. It could be harmful to our recruiting numbers, after all. I would hope it would be, in any case. And no, I know they won’t, since the information was released under the Freedom of Information Act and whatnot, but it still seems like the sort of thing that some people might suggest was better if left unpublicized.

Snakes on a Plane!

Posted by Dan Hertz on August 18, 2006

Okay, so I admit that I was very skeptical when I first heard about this movie. However, after reading about it on wikipedia, in particular upon reading Josh Friedman’s blog entry about the title of the movie and all the entertaining things relating to that. That entry is particularly important since it also gave rise to the phrase which was then ultimately brought into the movie as a Samuel L Jackson Line, ‘muthafuckin’ snakes on a muthafuckin’ plane‘.

It’s such a simple concept. And yet so very, completely and utterly… stupid. What more can you ask for? I plan on seeing it as soon as possible, obviously, although I may have to go see Superman Returns first, since that is actually likely to be a good movie and whatnot. However, I can’t help but wonder if the Superman movie will feature snakes… on a plane. And if not, how it can possibly compete with this other cinematic masterpiece.

One of my favorite things about the whole story is that the producers were thinking of changing the title of the movie to something less silly-sounding. Samuel L Jackson was apparently not amused, since the main reason he decided to do the movie was precisely because of the title. Quoting from the Wikipedia article:

At one point, the film’s working title was altered to Pacific Air Flight 121. In August 2005, a perturbed Samuel L. Jackson told an interviewer, “We’re totally changing that back. That’s the only reason I took the job: I read the motherfucking title.”In another interview in early 2006, Jackson claimed that once he learned about the movie title being changed he said: “What are you doing here? It’s not Gone with the Wind. It’s not On the Waterfront. It’s Snakes on a Plane!”

And really, the man has a point. I think the movie will be entertaining if nothing else. :)
