The Naked Piper

Well, Beth and I were in NYC over the weekend visiting my brother and sister in law, which was of course all good fun. On Sunday we got to see something which was described by many people in the crowd as “only in New York”, although my favorite quote would belong to the irate and annoyed New Yorker who, upon viewing the proceedings, said: “Who the fuck does he think he is? Conan the fuckin’ Piper?”

Yes indeed, there was a naked (well, mostly anyway) bag piper going around playing his pipes near Times Square, in front of the NYC public library (which is what I’ve got in the video here), and walking around a bit.

Now it wasn’t as cold as it has been in recent weeks, but I was still pretty impressed, given that his entire clothing outfit was, as is obvious from the movie clip, basically tartan underpants. Well, ok, there are also his socks, and his hat, of course. My personal favorite part of the outfit was the sporran, which was, it seems, an entire badger, with claws and everything. Also note that he has his dirk in his sock. Attention to detail is important if you’re going to be in the naked piping business, you know

Anyway I’ve got some pictures as well, so I’ll try to put them up soon too, but the video somehow captures some of the truly surreal element of it all. I mean, how often do you really get to see someone standing in front of the NYC public library playing the bag pipes naked?
